BetMGM: Saints have long-shot odds of landing Deshaun Watson

Do the New Orleans Saints have a chance at trading for Deshaun Watson? Sure, but it isn’t a good chance, according to the oddsmakers at BetMGM. The Saints are listed right in the middle of the pack at +4,000, tied with the Los Angeles Rams and Las Vegas Raiders. It’s possible those teams could look to move on from Jared Goff or Derek Carr to make a run at Watson, but that isn’t the most favorable company for New Orleans to keep right now.

For reference, the teams given the best odds of trading for the embattled Houston Texans quarterback are the New York Jets (+300) and Miami Dolphins (+350), with the New England Patriots (+900) a distant third. The most-likely scenario per BetMGM is for Watson to remain with the Texans (+125).

There are a couple of issues at work here. Watson’s fractured relationship with Texans ownership runs so deep that reports suggest he wants out regardless of who the team hires as its next head coach. On top of that, Watson has a no-trade clause in his contract, which he can choose to waive and force a trade with his preferred destination. And the Texans still have grounds to demand a king’s ransom for him in draft picks and players despite that.

So, don’t write off the Saints in this sweepstakes. But maybe don’t put the farm on them, either. Maybe the odds shift a bit once Drew Brees makes his expected retirement official.
