According to Google Trends, there’s been a 5,000 per cent increase in searches for ‘velvet homeware’ in the past month, and it’s not hard to see why.
Tactile, luxurious and timeless, the fabric is usually made from silk, cotton or a blend of both, while historically it’s been associated with royalty and rock stars, such was the costliness and complexity of its production.
Now, though, it’s enjoying something of a revival, both on the catwalk and in our homes, thanks to the texture, warmth and opulence it affords to spaces, whether in larger pieces such as an accent armchair or in smaller accessories like throws and cushions.
“Velvet is a beautiful addition to any bedroom, bringing with it a luxurious sense of drama, comfort and romance,” explains Georgia Metcalfe, founder and creative director at French Bedroom, the furniture specialist that has seen an 85.2 per cent increase in velvet product sales from 2024 to 2025.
“Available in a spectrum of colours, it complements a variety of styles, from traditional elegance to eclectic interiors, making it one of the most versatile upholstery choices. Its tactile richness elevates even the simplest of spaces, while its unique structure absorbs sound and softens a room’s acoustics, creating a tranquil and cocoon-like atmosphere.”
She adds: “Whether chosen in jewel-like greens and blues or soft, powdery pastels, velvet has an enduring quality that transcends fleeting trends. Layered upon itself or paired with contrasting fabrics, it remains fashionable year-round. It’s the ultimate whisper of luxury that turns any bedroom into a place of indulgence and serenity.”
But how do you keep it in tip-top condition? Metcalfe advises: “To keep velvet looking luxurious, gently hoover with an upholstery attachment, brush with the pile and spot-clean quickly with a mild wipe, but never with harsh chemicals – just patience and a little natural steam.”
Why you can trust me
As an interiors editor who regularly writes for the likes of The Times, The Telegraph, House Beautiful and The Standard, as well as being on my third home renovation (why do I do it to myself?), I’m an expert on everything décor. I also consult and create content for the biggest interior brands on the high street, from OKA and Atkin & Thyme to Tesco, amongst others, and every spare minute is spent trawling social media and thumbing glossy magazines for the latest and greatest trends in the world of home. That, and I have a huge shopping problem when it comes to accessories, especially scatter cushions (just ask my husband – we need a shovel to get into bed at night).
Below, I round up the only velvet homeware worth buying, from big-ticket items to little luxuries.
