The Tech Tree in SAND: Raiders of Sophie is one of the most important aspects of the game. Spread across four tiers and three different vendors, you can spend resources to unlock various upgrades.
However, you’ll need to prioritize the upgrades to aid your in-game progression.
Best SAND: Raiders of Sophie Tech Tree upgrades to get first
The table below has a list of what I consider to be the most essential upgrades. Some of them should be unlocked on priority if you want to thrive in the desert.
| Upgrade | Reason |
|---|---|
| Engine Upgrades | The trampler is your home in the sand, and keeping it sheltered is essential. Any upgrades for your engine (aka the Reactor) will increase its health and keep it intact for longer during a battle. |
| Improved Reactor | Similar to the previous upgrade, a better reactor is necessary as you build up your trampler. |
| Crew Room | When you start with your first trampler, there won’t be much importance for a crew. However, having crew members will help you survive battles (since you can’t manage every nook and corner by yourself). Once you unlock this upgrade, you can add Crew Rooms to your trampler. |
| Battering Ram | Once you have built up your trampler and added the offenses, it’s time for defense. The Battering Ram is the best defensive upgrade in my books. It saved my trampler in at least two different occasions. |
| Shovel | In SAND, more resources are key for quicker progression. The Shovel allows you to find items that are usually buried in the sand. Since this is a Tier 2 upgrade, it doesn’t take long to unlock. |
| Cannons | Cannons are the ultimate offensive arsenal for your trampler. They’re big, strong, and do plenty of damage. However, you’ll need to invest many resources to unlock and then build them. These should not be your early game unlocks, but don’t forget them. |
| Wooden Decks and Cargo Deck | These are simple unlocks that allow you to carry and keep more items on your trampler, allowing you to extract with more loot from your runs. |
| Chassis Upgrades | There are multiple Chassis upgrades available from Godlewski’s Expedition. Upgrading the chassis allows you to install more upgrades, compartments, and more. |
| Workshop | Having guns and ammo is necessary if you want to remain alive. However, you can’t always get them from loot. Having a Workshop enabled on your trampler allows you to craft ammunition from raw materials. |
Here’s the complete list of Tech Tree upgrades to unlock. Once you unlock the workshop, you can then use crafting recipes to get more guns and ammo as required.
