Best running apparel brands: Top picks for performance and style

Let’s face it, psyching yourself up for a run isn’t always easy. First, you have to win the mental battle that you really do want to go, and that’s before you even contemplate the distance or the route.

There’s one way you can give yourself a headstart, though: having a good selection of running gear. If you have a drawer stocked full of quality performance wear that can deal with varying weather, mileage or terrain, you’re way more likely to make it to the next starting line.

But how do you sort the genuinely good running brands from those that are all talk? Well, that’s where I come in. As a seasoned runner with a couple of marathons under my (running) belt, I’ve been able to try most of the well known brands, as well as independent labels and high street activewear collections – so I can help to point you in the right direction.

What are the best running brands?

As a general rule, the big players know what they’re talking about: megabrands like Nike, Adidas, Asics and New Balance have big R&D budgets, so you can rest assured that the collections they put out are nearly always hit the mark – usually at a great price considering the standard.

Then you have some labels which are newer on the scene like On and Hoka which have become cult favourites thanks to their innovative approach, as well as indie labels like Tracksmith and Acid Running if you want to look cool while you’re out and about (who doesn’t?!).

For affordability, the high street is your best bet. Though the collections won’t feel quite as effective as those by the activewear experts, they’ll do the job for a much more reasonable RRP. And when it comes to accessories, there are some companies with specialities: Oakley for sunglasses, Freetrain for harnesses and so on.

What running gear should I buy?

You’ll want to be prepared for any eventuality. We’re talking everything from base layers to shorts and t-shirts, as well as having weatherproof pieces like lightweight jackets and accessories which can help along the way: a running harness or vest, for instance. Trainers are obviously a must, but take a look at my running shoes round up for a more in depth look at the best available now.

But don’t worry, you don’t need it all at once. Since we’re approaching summer right now, focus on pieces which will be good in the heat, and you can build up your winter running wardrobe when we’re entering autumn.

Adidas

Adidas is arguably the most hyped up sportswear brand right now (did someone say Sambas?), so why not give your running wardrobe an in vogue upgrade with the German brand’s activewear collection? There’s everything from T-shirts to vests to shorts to base layers, tracksuits and accessories. Wear the triple stripe like a badge of honour.

New Balance

I wear New Balance more than any other running brand. The pieces balance functionality – running shorts which include a phone sleeve or a running vest with engineered mesh for ventilation in the heat – with aesthetics, namely strong colours and understated branding. Everything is thoughtfully designed from start to finish.

Asics

For no-nonsense running gear which hits all of the practical sweet spots, head to Asics. The focus is on fabric spec and performance, with pieces like seamless tops and split seam shorts which are designed to leave you to focus on the workout at hand. Expect muted colourways and a clean finish.

Nike

From sponsoring Dina Asher Smith and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce to the Nike Run App, which offers free guided run plans for everything from 10k races to marathons, Nike has a strong foothold in the running world.

It’s no wonder, then, that the activewear collection is one of the best. It’s innovative. It’s effective. And it will leave you to run your PB in style.

Saucony

Not many running companies can say they have over a century’s worth of experience in making running gear. Well, Saucony (pronounced saw-kuh-nee) is one that can. Though it was originally founded as a running shoe brand proper in 1898, the range now includes everything from apparel to accessories – and the entire collection is meticulously tested to make sure each piece is up to scratch.

The American label prides itself on being appropriate for all runners, so there’s something for everyone from beginners to racers.

Cult Favourites

Hoka

Hoka was founded in 2009 to create running shoes which deliver more support and cushioning when running downhill – one of the co-founders, Nicolas Mermoud, actually came up with the idea while he was running the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) which is a particularly hilly route.

Once the shoes experienced success, the brand introduced apparel which has since become a comprehensive selection, from vests to tracksuits and top layers. The entire collection feels premium and, since it’s designed by runners, every piece has a technically-advanced finishing touch.

On Running

Whether you’ve noticed them on the corporate bros on the tube or avid runners racking up the miles across the city, On’s viral trainers are instantly recognisable thanks to the unique tread and now iconic logo.

Well, it’s not just the shoes that should be on your radar, because the apparel is just as good. Like the shoes, it’s innovative, made using top tier textiles and puts design first, with cool colourways and prints throughout.

Vuori

For luxurious activewear, Vuori takes the top spot. As soon as you try any of the Californian brand’s pieces, you’ll see what I mean. Everything is super soft and well fitting without compromising technicality or performance. My favourite piece is the Kore Short – a versatile investment which you can use off the track too.

Style & Substance

Tracksmith

While many brands prioritise functionality over design, Tracksmith sees them as equally important – and, from an aesthetics perspective, it’s the best brand in this list.

The collection is all inspired by vintage collegiate running teams from the eighties – think diagonal stripes and retro colourways – so it feels retro yet elevated and stylish. And that doesn’t mean to say it’s all looks: the fabrics are premium and each piece is designed with the runner in mind.

If you want to double down on the Ivy league-coded design, check out the latest collaboration with Rowing Blazers which takes the already preppy feel to a whole new level.

Acid Running

If you’re into the offbeat skater-meets-surfer vibe, it’s time to become familiar with Acid Running. Wear a two piece set and you’ll look more like you’re wearing a co-ord from an underground brand than a performancewear label thanks to the cool logos and modern silhouette.

The shorts are some of the best going, thanks to the 2-in-1 base layer construction and extra details like a phone sleeve and key pocket.

Represent 24/7

You may already be acquainted with Represent’s RTW collection, which is a favourite of everyone from Sam Fender to Michael Ward, but the Manchester-based designer has a performancewear range too. It’s called Represent 24/7, because it’s designed to be worn – you guessed it – 24/7.

You could finish your run and head for a self-congratulatory pint and you’ll look like you’re dressed appropriately for both – but only if you’re not too sweaty. Since it’s not specifically designed for running it’s a little less technologically advanced but it wins big style points. If it’s wearable versatility you’re after, this will be right up your street.

Running Accessories

Oakley

Few eyewear brands are as ingrained in the sports world as Oakley. So, naturally, its range of running eyewear doesn’t disappoint. You can opt for anti-glare, peripheral vision, enhanced contrast or even prescription lenses. While the brand’s signature is the wraparound construction, there’s also more classic options for those who aren’t into the sporty look.

Freetrain

Some running jackets or shorts don’t have adequate pockets for your belongings, and, even when they do, sometimes the weight can then be distracting. The perfect solution? A Freetrain harness. It stays in place throughout the run and has plenty of space for all of the necessities. Even better, the easily-accessible phone pouch has a touch-sensitive screen so there’s no admin if you need to quickly respond to a text or email.
