When you think of baseball caps, your mind automatically goes to summer, but I’m here to tell you it’s an accessory which has so much more to give.
Sure, they’re good when it’s hot – they deliver shade, look great with shorts and a T-shirt, keep your skin protected from UV rays etc. – but when autumn hits, they work double duty. Beyond days when it’s sunny, they’ll also keep the rain out of your face and keep you warmer when it’s too early in the year for winter’s knitted headgear. And bad hair days? Solved all year round.
That’s why it’s a good idea to invest in quality and timelessness: if you go for a cap that’s classic and well-made, it will give your outfit serious mileage for many seasons to come. The only problem? Pretty much every brand offers its own take, from premium indie labels to the top designers. Faced with a sea of baseball caps, it can be challenging to know which to go for.
But that’s where I come in. As a seasoned menswear writer and stylist, I’ve seen my fair share of baseball caps and know the best brands to choose. And, as luck would have it, I’ve put together this list of the best you can buy now – as well as a few tips on how to wear them for big style gains.
What type of baseball cap is best?
Since you want it to work for most settings, it’s generally best to lean into a simple, quiet luxury vibe. Good fabrics. Versatile colours. Low-key embroidery and understated branding (IYKYK, after all). Do that, and it’s even easier to justify a high RRP from a future cost-per-wear perspective.
Avoid five-panel designs with a structured front panel because they can look a little American jock-coded (not in a good way). Never go for mesh.
Instead, go for unstructured six-panel designs crafted from cotton or corduroy, which feel more Nineties off-duty celeb or preppy Ivy League guy. And always look out for a little compartment which hides the adjustable strap at the back.
How should I wear my baseball cap?
Baseball caps can look good with almost anything, but how you wear them completely changes the vibe. According to TikTok, guys are automatically hotter with a backwards cap flex à la JFK Jr. While this works on occasion, it can look a little casual and, if you’re not big into your caps, sometimes feels like too much of a thing. Wearing it front-on is always a win, though. It’s smarter and still feels laid back without looking like you’re too try-hard.
If you’re still looking for styling inspo, there are a few menswear pros who wear them well. Want to double down on casual? Jeremy Allen White’s your man. Or perhaps you like the turbo dad tourist vibe? If that’s the case, take a look at Bad Bunny. For a statement cap flex, Timothée Chalamet’s got you covered, or for full undercover celeb mode, check out Andrew Garfield.
I’ve rounded up the best designer baseball caps of the season, showcasing luxe leanings on a casual accessory.
