Best blinds for the bathroom and how to choose

Captain Obvious here: privacy in the bathroom is essential.

Unless you’re lucky enough to live on your own, it’s the only room in the house where you are guaranteed alone time. Whether you’re whizzing around in the morning getting ready for the day or unwinding in the tub to kick off your weekend on the right foot, bathroom time is all about you.

Aside from getting - and using - that lock on your door, it’s a good idea to shield windows when you’re occupying the room to protect your modesty.

The trouble is that options in such a moisture-prone room can be few and far between. Unless you’ve got excellent ventilation, curtains are a no-no. They’ll only act as a net to catch water droplets, and risk developing mould, which has never been part of anyone’s interiors dream.

Another option is adding privacy film like Purlfrost over the top of glass windows to distort the image while still allowing light to flood in. It’s a great alternative if you’ve got a small window that won’t fit options like blinds.

But if you do happen to have regular-sized bathroom windows, blinds offer the flexibility of having lovely natural daylight in the room (a must for shaving and doing makeup) with total privacy once they’ve been fully rolled down.

Roller blinds are much easier to clean than vertical blinds or the Venetian sort because they’re one long piece of material. As long as they have some sort of moisture coating, there should be no issue with spraying with cleaning fluid and then wiping down to keep everything nice and hygienic.

That said, wooden blinds are perfect if you’re hoping to emulate a spa-themed look or want your bathroom to feel like a swish hotel suite somewhere in the tropics. Given that your walls are likely to be tiled, blinds are an easy way to inject colour and personality into what is often the smallest room of the house.

If you’re shopping for bathroom blinds, we’ve rounded up the nicest options to splash out on now. Be sure to measure the window frame carefully before committing to a purchase to avoid disappointment.
