Bertie Auld tributes as Celtic legend hailed as 'a Lion with a smile and a story'

Tributes have flooded in for Celtic legend Bertie Auld following his sad passing at the age of 83.

A key player in the Glasgow side's famous 1967 European Cup triumph, the club announced the death of the Lisbon Lion on Sunday.

As well as the Hoops' continental triumph, Auld won six league championship medals, four Scottish Cups and five League Cups and scored 85 goals in 283 appearances over two spells for Celtic.

The Maryhill-born footballer spent his later years regaling the Hoops supporters with stories in the club's hospitality suites.

His family announced in June that Auld was suffering from dementia.

On Sunday evening, Celtic chairman Ian Bankier said: "I don't think words can ever adequately describe what Bertie meant to the club and our supporters. He was a giant of a player, a giant of a man and quite simply Mr Celtic.

"He scaled the greatest of heights as a player with his talent, but it is who he was as a man that made him so much more to us all.

"He enriched all our lives so greatly with his humour, his character and personality and for that we will forever be grateful."

And dozens of tributes and memories of Bertie have been widely shared on Monday morning.

Glasgow junior football team St Roch's FC described the Hoops hero as a 'Lion with a smile and a story' and said: "When a legend becomes a friend. It was a privilege to know you and you were a massive part of the Candy Family.

"A Lion with a smile and a story, you will be missed by us all.

"When you get in the pearly gates, 'Entertain!' RIP Bertie."

The Celtic FC Foundation commented: "What a man Bertie Auld was. He appeared at countless Foundation events over the years and made each of our participants feel like they were the only person in the room.

"He meant the world to our team and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

"You’ll Never Walk Alone, Bertie."

The Maryhill Bertie Auld Celtic Supporters Club shared their memories of Bertie, adding: "Today the Celtic support has lost an absolute legend and gentleman.

"A wonderful man that has been a great support to our CSC ever since we started.

"Our thoughts are with Liz and all the family at this sad time. You’ll Never Walk Alone, Bertie."

Meanwhile, Celtic's great city rivals said: "Everyone at Rangers FC express sadness and pass on their sympathy to the Auld family and Celtic FC at the passing of former player, Bertie Auld."

Glasgow Live readers have also paid tribute to the great man.

Responding to last night's sad news, Douglas McIntosh said: "A true one of us although a king amongst men, RIP Bertie."

Patricia McGregor described him as "a true Celtic man through and through who had time for everyone."

And, summing up the emotions of many, Fiona Cameron simply hailed Auld as "one in a million".

Our thoughts are with Bertie's friends and family.
