Bernd Wiesberger wins Scottish Open as he triumphs over Benjamin Hebert in tense play-off

Bernd Wiesberger has won the Scottish Open after a tense final round play-off against Benjamin Hebert.

The Austrian struggled during his final round at The Renaissance Club but eventually prevailed in a sudden death showdown.

The pair both finished on 22-under after Frenchman Hebert carded a storming 62 to take the contest right to the wire.

Hebert, Andrew "Beef" Johnston and Nina Bertasio have qualified for next week's Open Championship after finishing in the top 10.

Amid Novak Djokovic's epic Wimbledon victory over Roger Federer and the England cricket team's incredible World Cup success, there was yet more drama to be had in North Berwick.

Wiesberger and Hebert played the 18th hole no fewer than three times before they could be separated.

First time round, Hebert had the chance to take the title but missed a birdie putt and the duo went again.

Hebert missed another two opportunities to end the contest but both eventually bogeyed.

And, finally, Hebert missed another vital putt and that allowed Wiesberger to claim victory with a par.

He said: "That was something different. I have to be grateful for how the week turned out.

"I knew it was going to be the biggest tournament that I was in a position to win, maybe together with PGA Championship a couple of years ago.

"You have to dig deep. It was a long day.

"We are starting all at zero next week at Portrush."
