Berlin Christmas market death: Man crushed on theme park ride in front of family

A man has been killed after being crushed beneath a roller coaster carriage at a Berlin Christmas market.

The unnamed man was hit by the carriage and then crushed beneath it.

Fire department spokesman Jens-Peter Wilker said crews were called to the market shortly after 7pm on Saturday.

Efforts to resuscitate the victim proved unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene, Deutsche Welle reported.

It is believed he was an attendant on the roller coaster and had been working when he was struck.

Counselling has been provided to a family of four who were on the ride when it struck him, according to reports.

Several visitors to the market suffered post-traumatic stress disorder and required treatment, states the The Berlin Spectator.

German police are treating the death as an accident.

The market, which opened for the season on Friday, has been closed since the tragedy.

It was pitched on a large car park Landsberger Allee in the northeast of the city.
