Benwell duo released over 'firearm' - after armed police find toy cap gun inside house

Armed police were called to Benwell over a suspected firearm - only to find a children's toy cap gun.

Now two suspects have been released without charge following Sunday's late night drama.

Police brandishing guns were called to Hampstead Road at around 11.15pm, amid reports a male had threatened people with a firearm.

A 52-year-old man was arrested, along with a 50-year-old woman.

The pair were held overnight and quizzed on Monday. However a Northumbria Police spokesperson has confirmed the pair are now in the clear.

"The two people arrested have been released with no further action and enquiries into the report are ongoing," said the spokesperson.

On Monday, the force confirmed no illegal weapons had been found - although a firearm of a different kind was.

“A search of the property was carried out and a toy cap gun found inside. Nobody was injured and enquiries are ongoing.

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact us via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting log 1194 280620."
