BENGALURU: Supernatural, from the stables of Pesi Shroff, staged an awe-inspiring come-from-behind victory to claim the riches at the Betway Bangalore Summer Derby at the Bangalore Turf Club on Sunday.
With the odds 10:1 stacked heavily against it, Supernatural, piloted by the seasoned Trevor Patel, broke away from the pack in the final 150 metres to power past King’s Ransom (PS Chouhan up) — also from Shroff’s stables — and MK Jadhav-trained Mojito (NS Parmar astride).
Sulaiman Attaollahi-schooled Prague, ridden by Ashhad Asbar, was quickly off the blocks and hit the front with Success and Triumphant in the chase. At the halfway mark, it still looked like a tight competition between Prague, Cyrenius and Success.
For the better part of the race, Supernatural was bunched at the back as Patel tried to manoeuvre past his competitors. With less than 200 metres from the post, Patel urged Supernatural to go for the kill and the horse responded well and went for the final push. In the last 50 metres, it was clear Supernatural was unstoppable.
Trainer Pesi Shroff, a champion of many derbies as a jockey, was elated with the 1-2 result. He said, “This is a great result. We all train for the races such as these and a 1-2 finish is very rare. I’m very happy and the entire team of riders and staff have done a great job for everything to come together beautifully.”
On the race, Shroff added, “Supernatural jumped further behind than I wanted to. But, Trevor (Patel) managed him very well and brought him out at the right time.”
Favourite Philosophy finised sixth. The 13-horse race was reduced to a 12-horse event just before the start as Once You Go Black was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.
