BENGLAURU: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Kalena Agrahar a lake in Bengaluru on Sunday and planted a sapling.
Sitharaman had, in 2017, sanctioned Rs 75 lakh for the redevelopment of the lake f rom MPLAD funds, while t he state government provided Rs 2. 2 crore. The 7. 7 acre man-made lake in Begurward close to Bommanahalli was badly affected by sewage inflow. It also became a spot to dump garbage and its water holding capacity shrunk.
The BBMP used the funds to remove silt, construct sewage lines and a wire fence around the lake, besides a sewage treatment plant with a capacity of 150 kilo litres per day, 15 public seats and a toilet.
“The lakebed was desilted, bunds were built, a sedimentation pond was created, and a walkway was constructed. The total project cost was Rs 3 crore,” BBMP said.
