Bengaluru anaesthetist goes missing from Everest base camp in Nepal

BENGALURU: A 31-year-old anaesthetist from the city went missing from Mount Everest base camp in Nepal on May 22.

He has been identified as Dr Chandra Mohan S, who works with Manipal Hospitals on Sarjapur Road here. Dr Mohan flew all alone from Bengaluru to Kathmandu on May 3 and proceeded towards the base camp, his family said. A bachelor, he lives with his parents at Vasantnagar.

Mohan’s father Shivan said Mohan had been sending regular WhatsApp messages and photos since landing in Kathmandu. “The last WhatsApp message and photos received from him were on May 22, from Namche Bazaar,” Shivan’s complaint to High Grounds police read. Mohan’s elder brother Dr Bhanu Pratap S told TOI that they flew down to Kathmandu on June 20 to look for Mohan on their own. “We contacted the Nepal embassy, which assured us they would pass the message to Nepal police. However, we have launched a search on our own,” he said.

Pratap said he had already trekked up to Tengboche in Khumbu valley on Monday.

“Dr Chandra Mohan is a spiritual person and the family suspects he could be in a Buddhist monastery. Mohan is deeply attracted towards meditation and related topics,” said a family source.

According to High Grounds police, Mohan had told his family he’d be incommunicado for some days due to network issues. “That communication was made on May 22. For 10 days, there was no message or call from Mohan and they waited. However, the family grew anxious when they did not hear anything from him till June 15. Also, since Mohan had travelled solo, the family couldn’t call anyone else. Finally, they lodged a missing person’s complaint on June 16 and we transferred it to Nepal police,” an investigating officer said.
