The Cincinnati Bengals have a new-look offense around quarterback Jake Browning that has had an obvious impact in the form of impressive numbers and a pair of consecutive wins.
But some of that tinkering under the hood to get Browning comfortable has had a less-publicized impact — making it harder for defenses to prepare and adapt.
Offensive line coach Frank Pollack revealed this was part of the sideline developments during last week’s win over the Colts.
“Guys were telling me on the sideline between series that the Colts players were calling out plays, saying what to watch out for, and it was constantly the wrong play or concept,” Pollack said, according to Pro Football Network’s Jay Morrison. “So they were just guessing. They had no idea. So that was fantastic.”
Some of this, Pollack went on to say, was head coach Zac Taylor throwing in the typical tendency-breakers at opportune times to keep the defense on its heels.
But as a whole, it’s pretty interesting to hear how the offensive overhaul has played a role in the two wins. Moving forward, it will be key for Taylor and his staff to keep varying things up now that opposing defenses have two games of film on what has made this new offense tick.
