Bengals lose breakout rookie returner Charlie Jones to injured reserve

The Cincinnati Bengals have placed rookie wideout Charlie Jones on injured reserve, per ESPN’s Field Yates.

Jones surfaced on the injury report this week with a thumb issue just a few days removed from another strong showing during Monday night’s win over the Los Angeles Rams.

A fourth-round pick, Jones hasn’t played a major role in the base offense but had been stellar on special teams, taking a return back for a touchdown in Week 2 and looking like he had a chance to break several others.

This is a major setback for Jones and the special teams unit, where Trenton Irwin will likely take over the return duties.

For now, there’s no word on the severity of the injury for Jones, so he could be designated to return at a later date this season.
