The Cincinnati Bengals are one of five NFL teams with one or zero analytics staffers, per an updated leaguewide list from ESPN’s Seth Walder.
Granted, the presence of staffers dedicated to advanced metrics and analytics doesn’t guarantee success. The Jacksonville Jaguars, for example, stick out as a team with plenty of names listed on the chart.
Still, it’s interesting context for the Bengals compared to the rest of the league. Some of these details presumably show up on the field, such as when considering the percentages of success on a third-down attempt or smaller factors, like what formations will be in play and when.
Walder admits he doesn’t include interns and it’s only a broad view of each team, so the normally secretive Bengals could have more going on in this area than he can track.
All that aside, it’s an interesting thing to take note of from a Bengals perspective. The team should be assaulting every angle possible in the pursuit of success, so the small number here is worth pointing out.
