Ben Stokes urges public to treat NHS heroes like World Cup winners

World Cup hero Ben Stokes reckons that term should be saved for the real heroes - the NHS workers putting their lives on the line for the nation.

Stokes inspired England to tournament glory in a magical 2019 summer that also included more brilliance in the Ashes series that followed.

But for all his exploits on the field that has brought him gongs galore and praise from across the world, the Kiwi-turned-Cumbrian has put it all into perspective in the simplest way.

“We get called heroes for what we do on a sports field, but these are the real heroes,” said the all-rounder.

“People risking their own lives to save others with total commitment, it is inspiring.

“We’re sportsmen who go out to perform and entertain as much as we can, and that brings a bit of joy to people’s lives of course, but it doesn’t really compare to what the NHS workers are doing for people.

“Last summer seems a world away right now with everything that is going on and it is clear where our focus needs to be.

“I’m not crossing my fingers or expecting anything as far as returning to play just yet, nothing is set in stone so I’m just sticking to what I’ve been doing throughout the lockdown so far.

“Sport will be back, don’t worry about that, but right now the health of the nation comes first and if it wasn’t for the NHS who knows where we would be.”

Stokes is playing his part off the field by helping to raise money for NHS Charities in a FIFA20 tournament featuring fellow cricketers Jos Buttler, and Stuart Broad on his Team Zeus.

Test skipper Joe Root is playing for Team Hercules along with Justin Rose and fitness guru Ulisses.

Gaming is part and parcel of a cricketer’s life, especially on tour, and although ‘Call of Duty’ is a favourite the enduring familiarity of FIFA means that every player can get involved and be competitive.

“Everybody thinks they are the best at it,” said Stokes.

“Probably Jos, Moeen and Rash are the best amongst our lot, Broady is pretty good too, and he always has a tactic up his sleeve.

“There is that much time on tour to kill when you’re not playing or between training sessions, gaming seems to be one of the most popular ways to pass the time.”

Stokes’ first match is against John Terry but he’s hoping to get drawn against Rose later on where he could have some extra support.

“I’d like to take on Justin Rose,” added Stokes.

“I’m a big fan of his. I love my golf and he is one of the very best out there and I enjoy watching him play and do well.

“Hopefully we could take each other on at FIFA first and then maybe a round of golf after lockdown, as long as he gives me plenty of shots!”

On hearing of the challenge, Rose said: “Oh boy. Leo idolises him so that’s good. The problem is he will probably root for Ben Stokes.”
