Ben Godfrey is unstoppable, Alex Iwobi skill and more moments missed from Everton win

Everton continued their fantastic start to the 2020/21 season on Boxing Day with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

A second half strike from Gylfi Sigurdsson secured all three points for Carlo Ancelotti's side in what was a tough and often frustrating match against a struggling opponent.

The victory was enough to take the Blues up into second place in the Premier League table and represented their fourth win in a row in the competition.

Again the game was played in front of an empty stadium, with fans sat at home instead of taking up their Boxing Day tradition of cheering on their respective sides from their seats.

So we've provided some insight on a few moments you might have missed while eating your Christmas leftovers and enjoying another Everton win.

Late change

The conditions at Bramall Lane on Saturday evening were not pleasant at all.

Nothing says "Boxing Day match in England" like a storm blowing through, bringing strong winds and heavy rain throughout the 90 minutes, does it?

Everton managed to battle through the elements to get the win of course, but one player needed a late switch before he could properly take to the pitch ahead of kick off.

After the players had walked out from the tunnel and were going through the last of their pre-match rituals, Alex Iwobi came over to the sidelines to change his boots ahead of the referee blowing the first whistle.

Perhaps conditions had changed enough for him to think other boots were a better way to go.

As we'll see a bit later, the new footwear clearly had an effect!

Unstoppable Godfrey

What a signing Ben Godfrey is turning out to be.

The defender arrived from Norwich on transfer deadline day with a fair amount of acclaim behind him already after some strong performances in the Premier League last term.

But, even though he was known to be a versatile player, surely no-one saw him performing so well at left back when Everton needed him most.

One aspect of his game in that position is a tendency to make a lung-busting sprint down the flank with the ball at his feet at least once across the 90 minutes.

Saturday's game was no exception, with a brilliant dash more akin to a rugby winger than a Premier League defender.

His run was eventually halted by a foul from George Baldock but even that couldn't stop Godfrey, who bulldozed through the crunching challenge to come out walking on the other side.

Calvert-Lewin relief

This was a Boxing Day fixture that could have easily ended in frustration for Everton.

The Blues had dominated possession for the majority of the affair and had created some half chances across the course of the game as the second half wound down, but hadn't fashioned that clear-cut opportunity they needed.

However, the decisive moment finally came in the 80th minute with Sigurdsson guiding the ball into the corner with a great finish to secure all three points.

The relief was palpable, and no-one summed it up better than Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

As the goalscorer wheeled away to celebrate with his teammates, the striker stood still and raised his fists to the sky in pure elation before heading to congratulate Sigurdsson.

I'm sure a fair few at home did exactly the same.

Iwobi's skill

Once that goal had gone in, it was just a case of seeing out the last few minutes of the game for Everton.

The clubs game-management in these situations has been much-improved over the last few weeks and it was good to see that they were strong once again in that area on Saturday.

Andre Gomes nearly won a penalty which would have certainly wrapped up the three points for his side, so they were still on the offensive, but the final moments did include some sense of taking the ball into the corner.

Iwobi did that on one occasion but looked like he was about to lose the ball when surrounded in close quarters by two opposition defenders.

However, a show of strength and some incredibly quick feet allowed him to dance right through the middle of the Sheffield United men, with both seeming dumbfounded by the skill on display right in front of them.

The confidence is certainly flowing through the Nigeria international at the minute!

Boxing Day quirks

As ever, Twitter account EFC Statto was on hand to provide the quirky side to Everton's result on Saturday evening.

And it provided an interesting note on the club's current Boxing Day form in particular.

The Blues have now won three consecutive game on the day following Christmas for the first time since they won seven in a row from 1984 to 1990.

That wasn't the only intriguing point to take from this weekend's game, however.

While many fans bemoaned the decisions of referee David Coote throughout, the Blues have actually won all five of the games he has officiated of theirs.
