Belfast personal trainer taking on marathon challenge in aid of food drive

A Belfast personal trainer is preparing to hit the road to help raise vital funds for the Devenish Community Food Drive.

Anthony Byrne will run four miles every four hours for 48 hours, beginning his marathon challenge on Friday, March 5.

All money raised will be donated to the food drive initiative which was set up by frontline worker Melissa McGrillen.

It is based at the Devenish Complex and has been helping those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

They provide food to those who are vulnerable and others who are self isolating, alongside families who are going hungry and parents who have been made redundant or lost their jobs.

Anthony, who works as a personal trainer at GymCo Finaghy, said: " I have taken on the challenge to run four miles, every four hours for 48 hours.

"I will be starting at 4pm on Friday, March 5, and I am looking forward to it. It is a challenge and it will be tough, but it is for a brilliant cause.

"The aim is to raise as much money possible to help the food drive which does fantastic work in the community, supporting the most vulnerable people and families during the pandemic."

Some people may be aware of the challenge through David Goggins.

Retired US Navy SEAL Goggins is an American ultramarathon runner, ultra-distance cyclist, triathlete, motivational speaker and author.

Goggins will also embark on the challenge on Friday in the USA, with over 40 countries also taking part in support of various charities across the world.

Anyone can participate by doing what they can - running, walking, cycling, swimming, bodyweight exercises, etc.

Anthony will be running the challenge, which will see him complete a total of 48 miles over the course of the 48 hours.

It will be his second gruelling charity challenge in the space of four months after he ran a marathon in aid of Movember back in November.

"I am a fitness enthusiast, so I don't mind pushing my body and mind into very uncomfortable situations," Anthony said.

"I always strive to help as many people as possible, so I like to do push the physical boundaries, take on these challenges and raise money for amazing charities and causes."
