Belfast city centre 'altercation between police officer and member of the public' under investigation

The Police Ombudsman’s Office is investigating a reported incident involving police officers and a member of the public in Belfast city centre.

A spokesperson for the Police Ombudsman has issued an appeal for witnesses to the incident last October.

It happened in the Lower Garfield Street/North Street area at approximately 7:30pm on Monday October 4, 2021.

"We are appealing for witnesses who may have seen an altercation between a police officer and a member of the public," the spokesperson added.

"We would be keen to speak with anyone who saw what happened or recorded footage of the incident on their mobile phone.

"We are aware of a member of the public who spoke briefly with an officer prior to them leaving the scene and would be keen for that person to make contact.

In other news, it's believed accelerant has been poured over the front door of a flat in an 'arson' attack in North Belfast.

The fire happened at an apartment block at Antrim Close on Tuesday morning, February 1 before shortly 4.30am.

Police are treating the incident as arson with intent to danger life.
