Belfast City Airport's special evening for autistic children to take place next weekend

A special evening for autistic children is to be held at Belfast City Airport.

It is a joint initiative with Queen's University Belfast's School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work (SSESW), and will take place on Saturday, May 20.

Autistic kids will get to experience the sights and sounds of airport life. The event is at 6.30pm, with places limited and allocated on a first come basis.

Organisers of the 'Autism in the air' event said: "Thinking of heading on your holidays soon? Do you have concerns for your autistic child/children using the airport and flying?

"We are hosting a free evening at George Best Belfast City Airport where you can experience the sights and sounds of airport life.

"Try before you fly!"

Event details (Dr Nichola Booth)

Queen's University lecturer in Behaviour Analysis in SSESW, Dr Nichola Booth, told Be: "Airport travel can be quite a daunting experience for many autistic individuals (the noise, smells and the general unfamiliar setting).

"This event hopes to help families prep for a summer break by going through all of the requirements for air travel with an aim of helping reduce any anxiety that may be associated with air travel.

"The event would not be able to take place without the support of the staff at GBBCA, especially Mr Bill Doole, the airport duty manager.

"We aim to offer more dates in the future to help as many families as possible."
