Beer drinking and nights in the pub 'good for society' - say top scientists

Beer has been a vital ingredient in keeping human societies stable, scientists believe.

A study of ancient civilisations shows that a year-round supply, even during droughts, was vital to foster compromise and debate among leaders.

Anthropologists say the Wari empire in Peru was held together from 600 to 1100 AD partly by communal boozing.

Their sour “chica” beer, made from pepper berries, would go off after a week so this was a reason for different tribes to gather centrally and settle disputes amicably.

Early public houses and festival events helped create a shared cultural identity and the US researchers warn that losing such get-togethers can see societies split.

Report author Ryan Williams of the University of North Carolina, said: “The Wari empire was huge and made up of different groups from all over Peru.

“We think these institutions of brewing and then serving the beer really formed a unity among these populations.

“Without them, large political entities begin to fragment.

Brexit is an example of this in the European Union today.”
