Bebo set for comeback as new site plans to launch next month

Bebo is reportedly returning as a “brand new social network”, according to a new site.

The website, popular in the mid-2000s, could be making a comeback with a new version launching next month.

Beyond the same name and logo, it is not clear if the new site is related to the old one.

Old content posted by users on the first site will not be retrievable in the new version.

It a statement, the site says: “Bebo is coming back in February 2021 as a brand new social network. We are currently in private beta. If you've been invited please enter the password below.

“Please note: All old data and photos were lost many years ago and are not recoverable. Sorry.”

First founded in 2005, Bebo was one of the earliest social media sites allowing friends to connect with one and another’s pages.

Users could post information about themselves including images and messages.

The site also allowed users to share a limited number of "love" with friends each day.

Despite overtaking MySpace as the most popular social media site in the UK in 2008, the firm filed for bankruptcy in 2013.

The Bebo company was later acquired by Amazon-owned live streaming service Twitch, in 2019.

Reports at the time suggested that it would be integrated with Twitch.

However, the Independent reports that Twitch have not confirmed whether it is involved in the re-launch, and both the new website and its registration give no information about who might be running it.

There is nothing explicitly linking it to Twitch, Amazon, or its previous owners.

Many Twitter users joked about the return of the site.

@daynamcalpine_ said: "Can’t wait to pick my top 16, other half and share three luvs a day".

@ChelseaREvans said: "I went from myspace to facebook and completely skipped bebo NOW IS MY CHANCE".
