Beautiful parkland on Swansea prom has been saved from development

Proposals to develop a seafront plot of land in Swansea have been shelved.

The grassy piece of land on the Mumbles side of The West Cross Inn was one of five seafront sites being considered for potential development by Swansea Council.

No decisions have been made on the other sites, and the public have had a chance to have their say.

But deputy leader Clive Lloyd said the authority was no longer minded to press ahead with the West Cross land.

Cllr Lloyd said: "We are really pleased with the way the public have engaged in the consultation on the foreshore sites.

“We’ve had some great feedback and lots of ideas so the consultation has been really worthwhile.

“However, given the sensitivities raised about the site on the Mumbles side of the West Cross Inn, we are minded not to proceed with this site, although we would welcome any ideas for small-scale community use of this lovely area.”

The other sites in question are the car park at the bottom of Sketty Lane, the Blackpill Lido, land around the skate ramp at West Cross, and two tennis courts at Langland.

Council chiefs have ruled out any high-rise development but said schemes such as cafes and restaurants, for example, could benefit tourists and residents.

The plans have been a big talking point in Swansea. Some people say the seafront should be left undisturbed while others say it needs something new.

West Cross councillors Des Thomas and Mark Child said they were delighted that the site by The West Cross Inn was no longer part of the administration's thinking.

Cllr Child said: “I want to improve access to the promenade, add to the attractiveness of the of the prom, and increase the amount of people enjoying it.

"I believe this is the council’s motivation as well, but I welcome the recognition that this is not a site for permanent structures and we have been able to protect it.”

Cllr Thomas said he and his Labour ward colleague had immediately made their feelings known about the West Cross site.

He added: "Some of the other sites advertised are ‘crying out’ for investment, and it's particularly sad to see the Blackpill Lido site only being used for three or four months of the year due to the financial situation that Swansea Council finds itself in."

One idea for the remaining West Cross site under consideration is a new skate park. It was put forward by Mumbles Community Council after it consulted its constituents.

Cllr Lloyd added: “We’ve been encouraged by the number and variety of ideas that have come forward, including those submitted by Mumbles Community Council for the skate park site which are really exciting."
