Bears sign kicker with ominous name

The Chicago Bears are searching for a kicker to replace Cody Parkey, who will be released as a June 1 cut after the veteran’s failed first season in Chicago that ended with a double-doink miss against the Eagles in the NFC wild-card round.

And as luck would have it, GM Ryan Pace signed a kicker Wednesday whose last name is a great summary of Parkey’s 2018: Chris Blewitt.

Blewitt has no NFL experience and last kicked for the University of Pittsburgh in 2016. He was in training camp with the Steelers in 2017 but has no attempts in regular season action.

Blewitt connected on 58.6 percent of his kicks as a senior and finished his career at Pitt connecting on 55-of-79 attempts.

The Bears now have two kickers — Blewitt and Redford Jones — set to compete in training camp. Parkey is still on the roster, but his fate is already sealed.

There’s a very good chance Chicago’s starting kicker has yet to be signed (or drafted), and it’s really hard to believe Bears fans will ever feel good about a player named Blewitt lining up for a game-winning kick.

That said, anything is better than Parkey at this point.
