Bears camp: Matt Nagy pleads with QBs to ‘test it’

Neither Mitch Trubisky nor Nick Foles were particularly accurate with their passes in Tuesday’s practice.

Still, Bears coach Matt Nagy would have preferred to see both quarterbacks be more aggressive with their throws, particularly during 7-on-7 drills. Instead, he said, they checked down too often.

“[That] is a good time to test it,” he said, “Even if it’s not so much the greatest read, test it and see what some of these players can do.”

Such drills take place without blockers or defensive linemen. The quarterbacks throw to five pass-catchers and take the snap from a center. Nagy offered a caveat — as with every aspect of the Bears’ quarterback derby, he’ll have to check the practice tape — but sounded disappointed.

The Bears’ season opener looms Sept. 13, and Nagy said he’ll take his time naming a starter.

I didn’t think they tested it enough today,” Nagy said.
