Bears announce new college scouting director, other changes

May 11--The Chicago Bears on Wednesday announced Mark Sadowski as their new director of college scouting, one of several changes to their scouting department that occurred last week after the draft.

Sadowski was promoted from his role as a senior national scout. In replacing Joe Douglas, who left last week to head the Philadelphia Eagles' personnel operation, Sadowski ascends to the third rung of the department's hierarchy, beneath general manager Ryan Pace and director of player personnel Josh Lucas.

Douglas' departure after only one season disrupted the continuity Pace hopes to establish in the front office. But Pace had authority to block Douglas' move and did not. Sadowski immediately emerged as the scout to replace Douglas.

He solidified his candidacy for a promotion by how he covered the southern half of the United States for the Bears in the recent draft. Sadowski's connection to Pace dates to his tenure as a New Orleans Saints area scout from 2001-05. During that time, Pace worked at several levels of the Saints' pro scouting operation.

Sadowski, a St. Rita graduate, is on his third general manager with the Bears, having joined the organization in 2005 as an area scout. His promotion created a vacancy that had a trickle-down effect.

The promotions that resulted: Francis Saint Paul was promoted to a national scout. David Williams was bumped up to West Coast scout. Jeff King was promoted to pro scout, and Chris White was elevated to pro scouting coordinator.
