Beach huts and cafe plan to breathe new life into Ardrossan promenade

A community organisation has lodged ambitious plans to breathe new life into an Ayrshire promenade.

Ardrossan Community Development Trust want to give the town's South Beach a traditional British seaside makeover with colourful beach huts and a cafe with outdoor seating central to their vision for the area.

The proposed development is part of a wider landscaping restoration to the beach front, according to a planning application submitted to North Ayrshire Council.

It will consist of renovating and extending the promenade's existing toilet block to form the aforementioned new cafe, upgraded public toilets and a kiosk with storage for the hire of leisure and beach related activities.

The beach hut units would sit just off the promenade, to the side of the cafe, with the intention of making them available for rental.

MAST Architects have been working with the trust to fine-tune the proposals for the redevelopment of the existing toilet block.

A design and access statement submitted as part of the application satates: "The proposed layout seeks to open up to the south-facing seafront and newly-renovated promenande with large glazed areas and bifold doors.

"The external raised seating area is covered to provide additional shelter and expands the cafe area outdoors, creating a holistic indoor/outdoor space.

"Internally, the existing block has been redeveloped into a small cafe with kitchen prep area and cafe seating.

"To the rear of the existing block there is also two unisex toilets and a fully compliant Changing Places toilet that is accessed externally with ramped accessible access from the promenade level.

"The intention is for the toilets to be accessible to the public, even when the cafe is not opened."

The planning application has been validated and is now pending consideration by North Ayrshire Council planners.
