Sydney Sixers players were given special access to their phones just before Sunday's BBL clash in Perth after Bondi Beach became the epicentre of a mass shooting.

Police say at least 12 people were killed after two gunmen opened fire at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday evening.

One gunman was killed, while the other has been taken into custody.

Under Cricket Australia's strict Anti-Corruption rules, players are forced to surrender their phones or have them locked away after arriving at the venue for a match.

But in the wake of the tragic events at Bondi Beach, Sixers players were given permission to use their phones in order to check on family and friends.

None of the Sixers players were directly affected and the team all took the field for Sunday's rain-delayed match, which the Scorchers won by five wickets with five balls to spare.

Sixers paceman Charlie Stobo said his heart went out to the people of Sydney.

"We are wishing everyone affected speedy recoveries and all the best," Stobo said.

"We had our phones locked away. We were allowed to use them to just sort of check in with family and friends.

"It's all happened pretty quickly."

Sunday's match was delayed by 80 minutes due to lightning and torrential rain, reducing the clash to 11 overs per side.

The Sixers posted 5-113, and the Scorchers chased down the victory target  with five balls to spare courtesy of Cooper Connolly's 59 off 31 balls.

Sixers recruit Babar Azam made just two, but Stobo said the presence of the Pakistan superstar had been a huge plus for the group.

"It's awesome," Stobo said.

"I mean, for someone like me who hasn't played a lot of T20 cricket, to have such a high profile player like him in the change rooms, you get to see how he preps the games, and get to know him as a person a little bit as well.

"It's been really cool."

The Sixers will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Adelaide.
