BBC The Responder filming starts as new cast members are announced

Filming begins today for BBC drama The Responder, with new cast members revealed ahead of work starting on the show.

The Liverpool-based drama is a six-part series written by ex-Merseyside police officer Tony Schumacher.

Award winning actor Martin Freeman, known for roles in hit shows and movies including The Office, The Hobbit, Hot Fuzz and Sherlock, was previously announced as the main character, Chris, in the drama.

Today, additional cast members have been revealed to mark the beginning of the show's filming.

Adelayo Adedayo, known for BBC3's Some Girls, Timewasters, The Capture and Unsaid Stories, will take on the role of Rachel, Chris's new rookie partner in the new drama series.

Based on Tony's real experiences on the job, Martin Freeman will play an officer on the beat in Liverpool, who is tasked with six night shifts.

David Bradley (Afterlife; Brittania; Broadchurch) and Rita Tushingham (Ridley Road; The Pale Horse; In The Flesh) will also take on roles alongside newcomers Josh Finan and Emily Fairn.

Tony Schumacher said: “I'm so incredibly fortunate to be writing for a cast as amazing as the one we've assembled for The Responder.

"From legends at the top of their game, to young talents who are legends in waiting, it's a writer's dream come true.”

Mona Qureshi, executive producer for the BBC, said: “The Responder is a unique take on modern policing, and Tony Schumacher gives us in Chris a heartbreakingly honest portrait of a man coming undone by the pressures around him.

"We’re so excited to see Martin Freeman in this extraordinary role and for Tim Mielants to bring the night streets of Liverpool to vivid life.”
