BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 LIVE! Winners and reaction as Rory McIlroy named SPOTY

BBC SPOTY LIVE! - (David Davies/PA Wire)

BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2025 LIVE

Rory McIlroy added yet more silverware to his already impressive 2025 haul this evening as he was named Sports Personality of the Year and also saw his European Ryder Cup squad named Team of the Year. Speaking in his acceptance speech, the Northern Irishman described his 2025 as “the year my dreams came true,” and it is hard to disagree. He ended a years-long wait to complete a career grand slam by winning the Masters in April, and followed that triumph up by helping Europe to a first away Ryder Cup win since 2012.

Ellie Kildunne, face of the Red Roses’ Women’s Rugby World Cup glory, finished as runner-up, with Lando Norris in third - the same position which won him his first Formula One drivers’ title a fortnight ago. Lionesses stars Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kelly joined darts phenom Luke Littler among the best of the rest.

Littler was snubbed twice on the night, also losing the Young Sport Personality of the Year title to Michelle Agyemang, who flew the flag for the Lionesses alongside Coach of the Year Sarina Wiegman. Catch up with the BBC SPOTY awards ceremony as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated live blog!

BBC SPOTY 2025: McIlroy's acceptance speech in full

21:09 , Arthur Ferridge

Rory tees up a winner’s speech, moments after his first of the evening with the Ryder Cup team.

“I know how much hard work and dedication it takes. It is a pleasure just to be in this room along with so many dedicated people. I feel truly honoured just to be a part of it.

“2025 has been the year I made my dreams come true, from Augusta to the Ryder Cup and everything else in between. It has been the year dreams are made of. I have a lot of people to thank.

“My family, my mum and dad, they sacrificed so much for me and I obviously wouldn’t be here without them, so if you are watching Mum and Dad, thank you.

“My wife Erica, my daughter Poppy, they are what holds me together - my rock. They couldn’t be here tonight, but I can’t wait to get back tomorrow and see them. Thank you for all the support. Love you.

“Thanks to the BBC for hosting these awards. I remember growing up and looking forward to this night, watching on TV, seeing who would win. It is a big part of the run-up to Christmas.

“I am very honoured to get my name on this trophy behind me, and hopefully I can challenge to get it again next year. Thank you everyone - it truly is an honour, and have a great evening.”

All will be revealed momentarily...

21:02 , Arthur Ferridge

The SPOTY winner comes next!

BBC 2025 Team of the Year

21:01 , Arthur Ferridge

Rory McIlroy accepts the TOTY award: “As a lot of other sportspeople in this room know, it is an absolute honour to be a part of these teams.

“I want to say congratulations to the England women’s football team, to the Red Roses also. Absolutely amazing.

“We (McIlroy and Fleetwood) are up here as two of the 12, we also had our captain Luke Donald, our staff, we couldn’t have done what we did at Bethpage without their help.”

BBC 2025 Team of the Year: European Ryder Cup Team

21:00 , Arthur Ferridge

The European Ryder Cup team take Team of the Year after a first away win since 2012.

One award for Rory McIlroy there, will there be another still to come?

20:59 , Arthur Ferridge

Moving swiftly onwards, the Team of the Year will be crowned next.

The contenders are: Europe’s Ryder Cup team, the Lionesses, and the Red Roses.

BBC YSPOTY winner revealed: Michelle Agyemang

20:57 , Arthur Ferridge

Michelle Agyemang is BBC YSPOTY!

That is wonderful to see. She was superb at the Euros and was so unlucky to be struck down with an ACL injury in the early days of this WSL season. Richly deserved.

Right then, Eddie.

BBC SPOTY

20:49 , Arthur Ferridge

A touching montage, here, paying tribute to all those sporting personalities we lost this year.

Chief among them are Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva.

BBC SPOTY: Sarina Wiegman's acceptance speech

20:43 , Arthur Ferridge

“It is an absolute honour to be here again, thank you to the BBC and the judges. I would like to congratulate all the other coaches who had fantastic summers. This award is for the players and staff.

“I have been part of a tremendous team. We played crazy matches, especially the games that we had to win, and sorry that we made you have lots of heart attacks, but it makes it even more exciting. We need to be the best prepared, be our best, but we were so together on the team. The togetherness in this team was so incredible.

“Finally, I would like to say that every coach, even more every female coach or future female coach: enjoy yourself. You can make a difference. We need more female coaches.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Sarina Wiegman wins Coach of the Year

Rory McIlroy

Lando Norris

BBC SPOTY 2025

20:35 , Arthur Ferridge

More stalling on revealing the first stage of the SPOTY vote... Time to discuss Scotland qualifying for the World Cup.

It was an incredible match, in fairness. Relive it here!

BBC SPOTY 2025: Mondo Duplantis

20:33 , Arthur Ferridge

Monda Duplantis has more pole vaulting world records than he probably knows what to do with, but his current personal best stands at a scarcely believable 6.3m.

Yes, really.

But first!

20:31 , Arthur Ferridge

Our World Sport Star of the Year is Mondo Duplantis!

The votes are in...

20:30 , Arthur Ferridge

BBC SPOTY 2025: Ellie Kildunne

20:24 , Arthur Ferridge

What is Ellie Kildunne’s secret to breaking tackles?

This answer will surprise you...

She says: “I’m so scared of getting tackled. I run around people because I’m trying to avoid it most of the time.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Ellie Kildunne

20:22 , Arthur Ferridge

Time, now, for a bit of the Red Roses. Let’s get acquainted with Ellie Kildunne.

You can do that with a Standard Sport exclusive interview here!

BBC SPOTY 2025: Hannah Hampton

20:17 , Arthur Ferridge

Hannah Hampton gives a nod to her parents, Sarina Wiegman, and Sonia Bompastor for helping her star for the Lionesses at the Euros - and pick up a few awards along the way.

“It is lovely, I’ve always said that it's nice the keepers get recognition now. Anything I have achieved has been down to my parents pushing me, and all the coaches I have had from Sarina here to Sonia (Bompastor) back in London. They helped me realise my dreams.”

BBC SPOTY 2025

20:13 , Arthur Ferridge

Hampton has been at the centre of a lot of drama this year, particularly surrounding her attitude and fallout with Mary Earps.

She was dropped from the side for that reason a few years back, and said: “The only person who could keep me going was my Mum. I couldn’t tell my Dad. I had to fall back in love with the game again, go back to what makes me happy.

“I’m just proud of myself for not giving up.”

BBC SPOTY 2025

20:11 , Arthur Ferridge

The Lionesses are featuring thick and fast here. We flit from Chloe Kelly to Hannah Hampton.

BBC SPOTY 2025: Chloe Kelly

20:10 , Arthur Ferridge

It looks like Lionesses manager Sarina Wiegman is choking up a bit as Chloe Kelly reminisces on some of her highlights in the England setup.

What keeps Kelly going? “That young girl with a dream to play football.”

BBC SPOTY 2025

20:08 , Arthur Ferridge

Chloe Kelly is really rubbing salt in Man City’s wounds, here.

She was out of favour at the Joie Stadium, forced a move in January, and suddenly it all just clicked.

A UWCL title, back in the England setup, a whole highlight reel of defining moments at the Euros....

Not a bad transfer at all, that.

BBC SPOTY 2025

20:06 , Arthur Ferridge

Is Lucy Bronze considering retirement, asks Alex Scott?

“No, not yet,” comes the reply from the Chelsea and England legend.

Of course she isn’t.

Jill Scott has arrived to recap the Euros - I’m reliving those goosebumps all over again.

Hannah Hampton saves in the final, that Chloe Kelly penalty...

Unforgettable.

BBC SPOTY 2025: Luke Littler

19:59 , Arthur Ferridge

Everyones favourite darts player is up on stage now, and he is branded “a freak” in his introduction.

Harsh, perhaps, but fitting enough - he has taken the game of darts by storm this year.

He gives a remote interview from his St Helens training base: “Its different when you’re a defending champion. World No1 for the first time coming in, but first game I got the win and we’ll go back down to Ally Pally and try to get another win.

“As players, we really have to focus, especially with the World Darts Championship. The fans bring the atmosphere. Next year, a year on, it’ll get even bigger.

“There’s a few titles on the list I’ve not checked off yet.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Lifetime Achievement

19:52 , Arthur Ferridge

Another touching acceptance speech as Thierry Henry speaks to his children on stage.

“Wow. Thank you. I would not have been able to do this without playing with great players in great teams, and great coaches.

“I am French, proud to be, but I am a Londoner. I couldn’t say this in a better way. I want to say thank you to everyone that believed in me, and also the ones who didn’t. Trust me, the list is long, we don’t have time for that.”

Speaking directly to his children on stage, he adds: “My biggest fear now is not being a good dad. For a long time I was a guest in my own house.

“I was not present along the way. I thought for a long time that I should be here for you, but it was the opposite. You are educating me, saving me from my traumas.

“You are showing me what it is to be human, to be vulnerable, and have empathy.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Lifetime Achievement

19:47 , Arthur Ferridge

Oh, this is sweet. Thierry Henry’s four children will present his award!

Very touching indeed.

BBC SPOTY 2025: Lifetime Achievement

19:47 , Arthur Ferridge

Fabregas on Henry: “He was the big star when I joined (Arsenal). Everything he touched turned to gold.”

Kate Scott adds: “He was the player every young kid wanted to be like.”

And one Arsene Wenger: “He won everything.”

Some wonderful archive footage on display here of Thierry Henry with a full head of hair. Remarkable to see.

BBC SPOTY 2025: Lifetime Achievement

19:44 , Arthur Ferridge

Calling all Arsenal fans... It is time for the Lifetime Achievement award!

Thierry Henry to the stage!

BBC SPOTY 2025: Rory McIlroy

19:43 , Arthur Ferridge

McIlroy tears up as he gives a nod to David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar.

“Being the father of a little girl, seeing Alice and Elsie’s dads up here, they are absolute heroes. Being a dad makes the losses a lot easier, but it makes the good moments even more special.

“To share [victory at the Masters] with Erika and Poppy (McIlroy’s wife and daugher), my whole family, they’ve watched me go through this. I could feel everyone with me on that day.

“I think as Lando said in his piece, I didn’t make it easy for myself. When you want something so much, the obstacle becomes yourself.

“I’ve had my chances at Augusta, I’ve been trying for 14 or 15 years to get that done. When you go through the heartbreaks, even how it finished in April, it just made it even sweeter.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Rory McIlroy

19:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Rory McIlroy walks on to Zombie, by the Cranberries. Impeccable taste.

BBC SPOTY 2025

19:38 , Arthur Ferridge

Tommy Fleetwood looks back on the Ryder Cup.

He tells Clare Balding: “It is a privilege to be a part of. As part of Team Europe, we love how proud you are made to feel to wear that shirt. At some point we won’t be part of that team, but for now we are a part of it.”

But does it bring out the best in a player? “I hope so! I just try to be the best team-mate I can be. It is a different pressure, we spend our lives as individuals. Letting yourself down is one thing, but you do everything in your power not to let the team down.”

BBC SPOTY 2025

19:36 , Arthur Ferridge

We are now reminiscing on the Ryder Cup, where Europe won in the United States for the first time since 2012.

What a week of sport that was - the controversy, the fans, the fast start, the threatened comeback on the final day.

Reminisce on the action here!

Voting for Team of the Year is now CLOSED!

BBC SPOTY 2025

19:28 , Arthur Ferridge

We go next to Lando Norris, who gives a remote interview as he takes some time off.

He apologises for his absence, and adds of his F1 drivers’ championship: “We didn’t make it easy for ourselves. Especially after Vegas, but we just had good competition and wanted to make it exciting for you, the fans around the world. We had a great time too, but it was a little more stressful inside the car.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Helen Rollason Award

19:24 , Arthur Ferridge

David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar accept their awards.

Stancombe tells BBC Sport: “I am just very grateful to accept this award tonight. I am just a Dad keeping a promise to his little girl.

“Elsie wanted me to win the London Marathon, and I did. It gave me a massive focus through the hardest times I have ever lived through.

“As a family it kept us all focused. It also gave me an opportunity to demonstrate Elsie’s effort, bravery, determination. It was just a reflection of that.

“I’d just like to thank everyone who supported us and made it possible. Jen, my wife, basically runs a marathon every day. She’s incredible. What she does with Elsie’s story lifts me up, I couldn’t do it without her.”

Aguiar added: “I just want to say thank you everyone for receiving us, and thank you for the award. It means a lot for me, my wife, Alice.

“I wanted to get this award for Alice. Keep dancing, spread Alice’s magic across the world. I will do the six major world marathons in her name, to fundraise for her foundation. Spread her name across the world.”

BBC SPOTY 2025: Helen Rollason Award

19:20 , Arthur Ferridge

The first award of the night will be the Helen Rollason Award, given to one who used sport as a means of overcoming adversity.

It is awarded to two fathers of victims of the tragic Southport stabbing who ran the London Marathon in memory of their daughters: Sergio Aguiar and David Stancombe.

BBC SPOTY 2025

19:16 , Arthur Ferridge

England and Harlequins star Marcus Smith speaks to Gabby Logan, reflecting on the Lions tour and looking ahead to a big second half of the season to come.

On what made this Lions squad special: “I would say first and foremost it was a massive privilege to play for the Lions and that feeling resonated across the group. The buy-in from the first camp, the commitment to the badge, was pretty special. That is what Faz said from the get-go.”

On kicking on with England after strong Autumn Internationals: “The Six Nations is a very special tournament, I remember growing up watching it with my dad and grandad. Hopefully we can continue that run heading into the World Cup.”

The answer may not surprise you!

She tells BBC Sport: "Winning the World Cup. I think it's the highlight of my career, not just 2025.

“It's something we've been heading towards and wanting to achieve for a long, long time and to do it on home soil, with a team that have so much love for, was amazing."

World Sport Star shortlist

18:36 , Arthur Ferridge

There are some fantastic names on the World Sport Star shortlist.

Mariona Caldentey has been a revelation since signing for Arsenal last year, and was a driving force behind their winning UWCL campaign.

Armand Duplantis, of course, is a pole vaulting phenom - he sets and breaks world records for fun, most recently clearing a scarcely believable 6.3m - more than 20 feet!

Liverpool and Egypt star Mohamed Salah needs no introduction, nor does recently retired boxer Terence Crawford.

Shohei Ohtani inspired the LA Dodgers to MLB World Series glory this year, with a batting average of .282 and an ERA of 2.87. For the uninitiated, those are absurd stats.

Olympic gold medalist sprinter Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is undefeated in the 400m - both flat and hurdles - for over two years.

Chloe Kelly speaks to BBC Sport

18:20 , Arthur Ferridge

Chloe Kelly has arrived at tonight’s ceremony, and tells BBC Sport that she is thrilled to be a nominee after a difficult start to the year.

She said: “Absolutely honoured to be nominated, it is such a prestigious award. I am grateful to be a nominee alongside so many special, talented athletes. I am grateful.

“For sure, [2025 was a] rollercoaster! At the start of the year it was tough, but we are here to celebrate. The Champions League and Euros were two great opportunities. These are moments to enjoy.

“To celebrate with the Red Roses and see what they did this summer was incredible.”

Ellie Kildunne

18:15 , Arthur Ferridge

Last but not least, we have England and Harlequins icon Ellie Kildunne.

The full-back was the face of the Red Roses’ victorious World Cup campaign in autumn, scoring a superb solo try in the final at a sold-out Twickenham, and was key to their Six Nations grand slam earlier in the campaign.

Despite sustaining a concussion midway through the World Cup, Kildunne racked up five tries and carried for 524 yards at the tournament.

Voting still open

18:13 , Arthur Ferridge

Voting is still open for tonight’s awards!

Anyone with a BBC account may vote for SPOTY, World SPOTY, and team of the year.

It will close when the ceremony starts, though, so be speedy if you want to get your vote in!

Hannah Hampton

18:10 , Arthur Ferridge

Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was another hero of England’s Euros campaign.

After nicking the No1 shirt from Mary Earps in acrimonious circumstances, she starred in Switzerland and saved two penalties in the final shootout.

Earlier in the campaign, she inspired the Blues to an unbeaten domestic treble and picked up the Yashin Trophy for the world’s best female goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or awards.

Oh, and she won the WSL Golden Glove, and last month was named the BBC’s women’s footballer of the year.

(Getty Images)

Michelle Agyemang

18:05 , Arthur Ferridge

Arsenal forward and England Euros hero Michelle Agyemang tells BBC Sport on the red carpet that her recovery from an ACL injury is progressing well.

Her injury came at a dreadful time, just as she was establishing herself as a first-team regular on loan at Brighton.

She is nominated for Young Sports Personality of the Year tonight, though, for her stunning cameo performances at the Euros.

(Getty Images)

Luke Littler

18:04 , Arthur Ferridge

Still just 18 years of age, Luke Littler has taken the world of darts by storm this year.

He became the sport’s youngest-ever world champion, and will soon be in the running to defend his title at the Alexandra Palace.

He finished second last year, but faces stiff competition to take top spot here.

(Getty Images)

Chloe Kelly

17:56 , Arthur Ferridge

Chloe Kelly was arguably the driving force behind the Lionesses’ Euros title this summer.

She only started one match at the tournament, but routinely impressed off the bench and smashed the decisive penalty home in the final.

Earlier this year, she also helped Arsenal to an unlikely Champions League title and finished fifth in the running for the Ballon d’Or.

(Getty Images)

Ellie Kildunne to BBC Sport

17:50 , Arthur Ferridge

Ellie Kildunne is looking forward to reuniting with her Red Roses team-mates this evening.

She tells BBC Sport: “I keep looking around for them. They were in another hotel than I was, and I think they’re on the team bus. Its like going to a game!

“I can’t wait to see everyone and see what they’re all wearing - hopefully nobody is in the same dress I am!”

(Getty Images)

Lando Norris

17:48 , Arthur Ferridge

Lando Norris was something of a late entrant to the SPOTY shortlist after he was crowned F1 world champion for the first time less than two weeks ago.

He was one of three contenders for the title heading into the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, but crossed the line in third to secure top spot.

The McLaren driver won seven races during the 2025 campaign, pipping his team-mate Oscar Piastri and four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

(REUTERS)

Rory McIlroy

17:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Rory McIlroy has had a heck of a year and, unsurprisingly, is odds-on to win tonight.

The Northern Irishman won the Masters in April and in doing so became just the sixth man to secure a career grand slam.

He did it in dramatic fashion, too, pipping countryman Justin Rose in a play-off.

Just when you thought his year couldn’t get much better, he went and won the Ryder Cup.

No golfer has won SPOTY since Nick Faldo in 1989. Could 36 years of hurt (loosely termed) end this evening?

SPOTY Lifetime Achievement award

17:28 , Arthur Ferridge

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry will be handed tonight’s Lifetime Achievement award, designed to recognise a person who has “made a major impact on the world of sport during their lifetime.”

Henry said: "Football has given me everything and I gave it my all.

"To be recognised as part of its history with this Lifetime Achievement award and to have made my mark for the fans and my team-mates is something I'll never take for granted."

He retired in 2014, scoring a remarkable 360 goals in 794 career club appearances (via Transfermarkt). More on that later!
