BBC's Clive Myrie urged to stay safe as he returns to Ukraine amid Newsnight job rumour

BBC News ' Clive Myrie has been urged to stay safe after returning to Ukraine this week for more coverage, amid speculation he may become the new host of Newsnight.

The reporter, 57, flew out to eastern Europe in late February following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Clive providing regular updates to BBC viewers on the ongoing war.

He had been covering the conflict from the capital Kyiv before he left the city last month and later arrived back in the UK following his two weeks in Ukraine.

The correspondent however had vowed to return to the war-torn country and has now gone back, with him having led BBC News at Six last night live from the capital.

He had confirmed his return to Ukraine in a post on Twitter yesterday evening, in which he showed a photo of the "sunset over Kyiv," alongside the hashtag ⁦#bbcnewssix.

Clive has posted another photo from the city earlier today, with him showcasing a "beautiful, bright morning" in the capital city - as he continues to provide news coverage.

His return to Ukraine has prompted well-wishes and concern from his followers, who took to the comments section of his recent posts to urged the reporter to stay safe.

One person wrote: "Hope you and your team can stay safe. Praying for you and the people of Ukraine." Another follower had commented: "Hoping it stays calm, take care."

Another said: "Sending you the best wishes Clive. Thanks for being out there and sharing the news from the frontline." Whilst a fourth wrote: "Take care and stay safe Clive."

"Stay safe. The news from Ukraine is profoundly shocking and sad but we must bear witness. Thanks to you and your colleagues for all you do," another follower responded.

Others were surprised by his return, with one saying: "Can't believe you are back there already. Stay safe you and your team." Another said: "Shocked to see you back there. Stay safe."

There was much praise for the correspondent over his work, with one follower writing recently: "True professional. Thanks for your reporting and look after yourselves."

Another said: "Excellent broadcast from you last night Clive." Whilst one follower commented: "Superb reporting as ever." Another said: "Keep up the good work fella."

It comes amid speculation that Clive could be set to replace Emily Maitlis, 51, as the host of current affairs programme Newsnight - following her recent departure from the BBC.

Emily has herself endorsed Clive - who currently hosts Mastermind - as her replacement, with her praising the fellow journalist in an interview with the RadioTimes on the weekend.

Asked about the possibility of him replacing her, she said: "I just think Clive's terrific. I think he's done so well. And I'm sure the team would give him a really, really warm welcome."
