BBC pundit Garth Crooks compares Everton star Bernard to a Blues legend

Match of the Day and BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has compared Everton's Bernard to the late, great Alan Ball.

The Brazilian was his side's match winner in their 1-0 win over Watford at Goodison Park on Saturday afternoon, Marco Silva's side first win of the campaign.

Bernard joined the Blues in August of last year from Shakhtar Donetsk, putting pen-to-paper on a four-year deal with the club.

And despite initially struggling to nail down a place in Silva's starting XI, the 26-year-old has since gone on to establish himself as a first-team regular.

And Crooks was more than impressed with what he saw from the midfielder at the weekend.

“This was a performance reminiscent of Everton legend the late, great Alan Ball," the former Spurs man wrote in his BBC Sport column .

"Bernard was full of energy and ingenuity. All 5ft 4in of him ran the show at Goodison Park against Watford.

“The problem with Everton is managing expectations. Should the Toffees finish in the top six then their manager survives.

"Anything short of that then Everton’s fans will start asking their usual questions. It’s unfortunate for Marco Silva that Liverpool are doing so well."
