BBC in schedule change as channel airs tribute to EastEnders' June Brown

The BBC has made a last minute schedule change this evening, following the tragic news of June Brown's death earlier today.

The iconic soap actress passed away at the age of 95 after a long and illustrious career on screen.

The veteran actor, who was known and loved for playing chain-smoking Dot Cotton on BBC soap Eastenders , is the subject of a documentary on BBC One this evening.

'June Brown: A Walford Legend' airs tonight at 8pm, straight after EastEnders ' usual showing at 7.30pm.

The programme follows the Suffolk-born telly icon's life from her tragedy-stricken childhood, to her tumultuous love-life.

The documentary will air in the place of Panorama special 'Obesity: Who Cares If I'm Bigger?'.

The investigative show, which is presented by fellow EastEnders actor Clair Norris, will be shown at a later date which is yet to be announced.

June embodied the part of Dot Cotton from 1985 until 2020 – a stint largely filled with wry quips, eye rolling and puffs of a cigarette.

Dot's marriage to second husband Jim Branning was a source of great admiration for her fans and critics alike.

Viewers will remember June was nominated for a BAFTA in 2009 for her performance in a heart-breaking episode where Dot came to terms with moving an ailing Jim into a residential home following a stroke.

Fans were enthralled with the devout Christian’s fractious relationship with her villainous son Nasty Nick.

Fans of the Walford soap were stunned when their relationship came to a bitter end in 2015 when - in true soap fashion - drug addict Nick was killed at the hands of his own mother after she gave him heroin and left him to die.

It was one of the darker moments in Dot's life on the Square, but she remained a true legend right up to her departure in 2020 and beyond, so fans have been left utterly heartbroken following the news of the actress' death.
