BBC bosses have hinted that coroanvirus storylines will be introduced on EastEnders.
The soap was brought to a standstill six weeks ago as the government announced lockdown plans, with the BBC deciding to halt production for the safety of the cast and crew.
In a bid to try and stop the show from going off air, bosses decided to reduce the weekly amount of episodes to just two so that they don't run out.
There is uncertainty over when EastEnders will resume filming, with lockdown measures set to be eased over the coming weeks.
But it seems scriptwriters will incorporate the global pandemic into new storylines when production is back up and running.
With Radio 4’s The Archers confirming that they will introduce virus storylines, the BBC's Director of Content, Charlotte Moore, hinted EastEnders may follow suit.
She told The Sunday Times : "Covid is a part of all of our lives and any show that reflects the contemporary world will need to reflect that."
An insider for the soap told Mirror Online that bosses won't take a "risk" and it remains unclear when the cast can return to work due to the pandemic.
They revealed: "No one will return until it's safe, no one will take a risk."
Fans of the BBC soap saw filming come to a halt on March 18 and episodes were dropped from four to two a week.
A spokeswoman for EastEnders said: "No dates have been set for filming to resume and we will not return until it is safe to do so.
"We will continue to follow the latest news and advice from the World Health Organisation and Public Health England."
Moore also explained the BBC's plan of action to Strictly Come Dancing back on TV - and it includes a measure that could fuel the notorious curse.
The autumn launch remains in doubt due to the coronavirus outbreak, but BBC bosses are determined to keep Strictly from falling victim to deadly bug.
They are currently working out ideas on how they can adhere to social distancing guidelines, including coronavirus tests and glass screens.
They are also toying with the idea of quarantining the dancing couples together - meaning they would isolate together without seeing their families for the duration of the run.
The show is famous for dance partners getting together, and the idea of quarantining pairs together could lead to even more broken relationships.
Moore added that show bosses are considering quarantining the celebrities and their dance partners and testing their temperatures regularly, while another plan they are eyeing is the installation of glass screens inside the studio.
