BBC axes Newsround afternoon bulletin after more than 50 years

The BBC has axed the afternoon Newsround bulletin after more than 50 years on air.

The after school bulletin will go off air in September when children return to the classroom after the summer break.

Morning bulletins will be cut from two slots to just one, but the remaining one will be extended from five to eight minutes.

Ofcom approved the decision, giving Newsround the go-ahead for it to prioritise online coverage.

The BBC had told Ofcom it wanted to expand the Newsround website but couldn't do so as it didn't have the budget while it kept airing the afternoon bulletin.

Newsround editor Paul Plunkett said in a blog: "Whilst this feels like a big change, we know that the Newsround website already reaches many more children than the teatime bulletin."

Plunkett also said Newsround is now planning to hire its first full-time environment journalist.

A new Youtube channel will also be launched in September.

The move means the BBC will reduce the minimum amount of news it broadcasts on children's channel CBBC from 85 hours to 35 hours per year.

Bulletins will now air once a day rather than at intervals throughout.

It's hoped that the move to online will appeal to more readers.

But Ofcom added a new condition to the BBC’s operating licence to say it must provide daily children's news online across a range of different formats, covering a range of topics and in-depth news and analysis.

Newsround presenter Martin Dougan (BBC)

Newsround is currently hosted by a range of presenters, including Ricky Boleto, Martin Dougan and Nazia Mogra.

This year Newsround has seen record growth, including reaching 1.7million users in the first week of May.

A BBC spokesperson said today: "We're delighted that Ofcom has approved these changes to our operating licence.

"This will allow us the flexibility to make more news for more children across more platforms ensuring the much-loved brand continues to thrive in the modern day."
