Batman filming cancelled in city centre amid coronavirus fears

Filming for Hollywood production The Batman has been cancelled in the city centre due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Production crews had set up around St George's Hall for filming of the big budget flick, which is due to be released in the summer of 2021.

Now, filming equipment has been removed from outside St George's Hall and the plateau is deserted.

Film fans had been excited when images showed barriers placed outside the hall, which had 'GCPD' and 'Gotham City Police Department' printed on them.

Warner Bros. has become the latest major studio to halt production on a major film in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The global virus originally broke out in Wuhan in China but has since spread across the world.

There are currently 1,543 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK.

The risk to the UK has been raised to high.

Robert Pattinson is starring as the caped crusader in the latest reboot of the Batman film franchise and it is not currently known when filming in the city will resume.

The new film will also star Colin Farrell, who had a major role in the 2016 Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, which also filmed scenes at St George's Hall.

A statement released by the studio, to Deadline, reads: “Warner Bros. Pictures feature production of The Batman will be on a two-week hiatus starting today [March 14].

"The studio will continue to monitor the situation closely."
