Barnet defender Dan Sweeney furious at lack of VAR in FA Cup thriller

Barnet defender Dan Sweeney has called for VAR to be used in every FA Cup match after the controversy in last night’s see-saw fourth-round tie at the Hive.

Brentford scored a penalty through Neal Maupay in the second half after Ollie Watkins went down under a challenge from David Tutonda when there did not appear to be any contact. Maupay’s strike levelled the tie at 2-2, and it ended 3-3.

Watkins seemed to apologise to Tutonda straight away but VAR was not in use despite the game being televised live on BT Sport.

Sweeney said: “If VAR is in for one game, then it should be in for others. The penalty was a real key moment in the match.”

VAR has been used in the FA Cup this season at Premier League grounds but not at Football League stadiums, where the technology has not been installed.

The PGMOL, the body responsible for the technology, will decide which ties will use VAR in the fifth round but some grounds — including Barnet, Brentford and AFC Wimbledon — do not have the capacity for VAR as they do not have big screens for replays.
