‘Barbie Girl’ hitmakers Aqua announce retirement after three decades together

  • Danish-Norwegian band Aqua, widely known for their 1997 hit song “Barbie Girl”, has announced their decision to cease performing as a live band after three decades together.
  • In a statement released on social media, the 90s Eurodance group explained that they felt it was 'the right moment to say goodbye' while their memories and mutual affection for the music and each other remained strong.
  • Aqua, consisting of Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, and Søren Rasted, rose to international prominence with “Barbie Girl”, which reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and secured the number one spot in the United Kingdom for four weeks.
  • Their debut album, Aquarium, released in the same year, solidified their global success with tracks such as “Doctor Jones”, and the band also successfully defended their song in a high-profile court case against Barbie manufacturer Mattel.
  • The group had previously disbanded in 2001, citing a missing 'spark', but later reunited in 2007 for tours, released the album Megalomania in 2011, and celebrated the 20th anniversary of 'Barbie Girl' with another tour in 2017.
