Banned driver borrowed partner's car instead of walking to the shop

A banned driver must do 120 hours community work for borrowing his partner's car instead of taking a three-minute walk to the shops.

Conrad Brailsford's trip was described as "crass stupidity" by his solicitor at Nottingham Magistrates' Court.

Stephen Burdon, mitigating, added: "He has very little to offer in terms of explanation.

"The irony is that it would take only two or three minutes to walk that distance to the shop to buy something he wanted which was not essential."

Police seized the car when they arrived at Brailsford's home on Nottingham Road, Hucknall on June 26.

That left his partner having to pay £170 to reclaim the Renault, which was insured and registered in her name.

Mr Burdon added: "There has already been a financial penalty on the family."

Brailsford, 29, admitted driving while disqualified and without insurance. His existing driving ban was extended for six months and will now run for 23 months.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said that Brailsford failed to answer questions when interviewed by police officers.

Presiding magistrate Peter Forster told Brailsford: "This is a very serious matter. You were part way through a period of disqualification."

Brailsford must attend ten sessions with probation officers and pay £175 costs.
