Bank holiday weather: Temperatures set to dip to -2C - and it could snow

There's a chance it could SNOW over the Pennines this bank holiday weekend as temperatures plunge.

It means the May bank holiday could be the coldest since records began, with mercury levels not expect to go above 11C.

The coldest one ever recorded was in 1982, when the highest temperature was 14.5C.

Expect some wintry conditions this weekend with mercury levels dipping to below freezing at night.

Tonight expect a 'ground frost' to develop as temperatures dip to around -2C, the Met Office warns.

Tomorrow, expect a cold start with mercury levels around 0C, particularly in areas to the east of the region, like Stockport.

And even further east, over the Pennines, there could be the odd wintry shower during the day.

It means conditions could be hazardous for anyone heading into the Peak District during the weekend.

But it's not all doom and gloom.

The cool Saturday morning should be followed by a spell of sunshine until around midday.

Saturday afternoon is predicted to bring a mixture of cloud, rain and sunshine.

Sunday should feel similar, with cloudy skies and the odd outbreak of rain, according to the Met Office website.

Temperatures should hover around 5C throughout the day, so it should feel pretty chilly.

There's a similar outlook for Monday, with cool temperatures, downpours and some sunshine.

The weather is set to be considerably different to last year, when the early May bank holiday was the hottest recorded since 1978.

Mercury levels hit 28.7C as the UK basked in the sun.

And during the Easter Weekend a few weeks ago, the region enjoyed some glorious weather, with temperatures over 20C.
