Backless dresses are the forgiving summer trend you need to know

One of the coronactivities I've familiarised myself with over the past few months is the thrice a day stroll to the cupboard in my kitchen where I house snacks.

Crisps, chocolate, sweets, you name it, I'm hoarding it.

While others were stockpiling loo roll and tinned tomatoes, I was ensuring that - should the apocalypse really be upon us - my proclivity for snacking would be appeased at all costs.

But now I'm paying the price for it; my jeans have shrunk and my army of slip dresses are less 'slipping' on and more being tugged on.

Others in my predicament may be running for the hills, or more likely, rushing to make Joe Wicks' morning Instagram HIIT. Me? I'm simply re-adjusting my wardrobe to accommodate my 'softer' edges.

The key I've found is ensuring an excess of billowing material, nothing too skimpy or body-conscious, and I've found salvation in the power of the backless dress. After all, if the focus is on my back, nobody will be paying attention to anything else (or so I like to think.)

I'm not alone: searches for backless dresses are up by 18 per cent since the start of June, according to Lyst. Satin backless dresses have experienced a particular surge, with a 70 per cent increase, while voluminous backless dresses are a close second with 55 per cent.

For the ultimate forgiving summer staple, opt for your backless dress in easy breezy linen and watch the compliments from your support bubble fly in. For optimum Grecian goddess vibes, sweep your hair from your face, keep accessories thin and gold, and pair with flat sandals. Et voila! A backless beauty she is.
