Baby names set to go 'extinct' in 2023 as parents snub them for more popular ones

We've recently heard all about the most popular baby names that parents simply can't get enough of, thanks to ONS releasing their most up to the minute data. But little is often said about the monikers dropping to the other end of the scale.

There are many names that were once a hit with mums and dads that are now falling out of favour, with few newborns being given them. According to experts, this can mean the names are at risk of going 'extinct' if no new registrations for them are made - and your name could be one of them.

The team over at Pregnacare by Vitabiotics has analysed government data from 1996 to 2022 looking at the number of babies born with each name every year. They've then used this information to predict the names that will be the least popular in 2023.

From their research, they claim there are 40 girls names and 40 boys names that looks set to go extinct in 2023, as each of the names were only given to three babies or fewer since 2020.

They claim some of the names on the list were previously extremely popular with Generation X, born 1965 to 1980 and the Baby Boom Generation born between 1946 and 1964.

These include Carolyn, Debra, Gladys, and Meryl for girls and Billie, Chandler, Greg, Stevie, and Walt for boys.
