A youthful Manchester United side fought for a point after a goalless draw away to AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rotated his squad with Sunday's trip to Newcastle United clearly in his thoughts, with eight changes made to the side that drew 1-1 with Arsenal.
Brandon Williams, 19, was handed his full debut while 17-year-old striker Mason Greenwood led the line, with the Norwegian seemingly unwilling to risk Marcus Rashford on the plastic surface.
AZ began on the front foot and had the ball in the net, but teenage forward Myron Boadu had his goal chalked off correctly for offside.
United found themselves under heavy pressure with Moroccan winger Oussama Idrissi proving to be a thorn in the side. It didn't take long for the 23-year-old get his first sight of goal, testing David De Gea's reflexes with a powerful effort from the edge of the box.
Solskajer experimented with Daniel James as a centre forward but the Wales international struggled to get involved. However, the 22-year-old had a hand in United's best chance of the half, sending a low cross into the path of Greenwood, but his shot was charged down by Ron Vlaar.
That was the closest United came and, despite an uninspiring performance in the first half, Solskjaer decided to keep things as they were after the break.
But again, it was the Dutch side who enjoyed the lionshare of possession with the attacking triumvirate of Idrissi, Boadu and Stengs looking threatening.
On the hour mark, Rashford replaced the ineffective Daniel James as United chased an unlikely winner.
But it was AZ who came close when Idrissi powered a half-volley just past De Gea's far post.
Solskjaer sent on Jesse Lingard, who hasn't scored a goal since January, and the decision nearly paid off immediately. The midfielder was sent through clear on goal and fizzed a shot inches wide of the far post.
That was as close as the Red Devils came to a winner and despite late pressure from the hosts, they held on for what turned out to be an important point.
But concerns over the performance and lack of goals remain for Solskjaer and his ailing United side, who lost Lingard to a muscle problem in stoppage time to add to their woes.
