Axe thug goes on rampage as police hunt suspect of terrifying attacks in Ayr

An axe wielding thug is said to be causing mayhem after a string of reported attacks in Ayr.

Barry Whalen’s Funeral Directors on River Terrace was targeted by the man, who was caught on camera smashing up the CCTV monitor.

Police are now probing the case of reckless vandalism which took place on Thursday, April 23 – a day after a car was smashed up just yards away on Garden Street.

Barry has been left shaken by the incident at a time when he has been overwhelmingly busy, dealing with funerals at a challenging time.

Barry said: “It’s so disrespectful. He’s pulled out an axe from a rucksack, smashed a few cameras, then just put it back into his bag.

“We are frightened. We have never had any bother the time we’ve been here.

“We’re overwhelmingly busy at the moment and this has taken up a lot of my time.

“It’s really stressful to put up with this, whilst dealing with funerals at a very difficult time for everyone.”

One day earlier, at around 4pm, Tanya Steel had her back window smashed while she nipped out to the bank in broad daylight.

After discovering the damage she rushed to King Street to alert police – who told her they’d also just had their station front door vandalised.

Tanya added: “The damage to my windscreen looks like an axe has been put through it as the parcel shelf of car has a pierced indent which would indicate a sharp instrument was used.

“When we reported it to the police they said they had someone in before our car was vandalised who matches the description – and he battered their door after it.

“The police have to do something about this. Our main concern is this guy is walking about with an axe in a bag. He’s a danger to the public. Our car got it, what’s going to be next, someone’s skull?”

Police Scotland confirmed they have received reports of both attacks, but no arrests have yet been made.
