Award-winning chippy, the Cod's Scallops, announces re-opening date - and this is how it will work

Award-winning chippy, the Cod's Scallops, has announced plans to re-open this week - but with strict safety measures in place.

The number one fish and chip shop in the UK has been closed since the start of the lockdown in March.

But the fryers will be fired up from this Wednesday, May 13, at all four takeaways in Wollaton, Carrington, Long Eaton in Derbyshire, and Market Harborough in Leicestershire.

However, there will be safety measures in place. Obviously there's no eating in and no customers will be allowed on the premises - not even when they turn up to collect an order.

"There will be a table at the front and a member of staff will bring it out when the customer arrives," said owner John Molnar.

Customers will be able to click and collect or order and pay over the telephone.

The Cod's Scallops is also hoping to work with taxi firm DG Cars to offer home deliveries for anyone not wanting to leave the house.

A scaled-down staff team, brought back from furlough, will be dealing with orders. They will have their temperature taken at the start and end of every shift and timers will remind them to wash their hands every 20 minutes.

Mr Molnar's mother-in-law has also been busy sewing fabric masks for employees to wear during their shift. The same team will be on all week and anyone displaying coronavirus symptoms has been told not to go into work.

"The biggest thing for me was staff welfare. Ultimately at some point we were going to have to take that leap. It's new for us so we are not overly going to take too many orders. We are conscious of not creating a crowd the same as some of the other fish and chip shops up and down the country.

"We're asking people to bear with us - the product will be as good but we need to get our head round the new system," said Mr Molnar.

More than 90 percent of the menu will be available for takeaway, from cod and haddock to scampi and lobster. Pies, sausages and black pudding fritters will also be on sale but there won't be any lemon sole, Norfolk crab or oysters

Opening times will be Wednesday to Saturday from 12noon to 8.30pm.

The Cod's Scallops was named the best fish and chip shop in the UK in January and had been looking forward to a bumper year on the back of the accolade.
