Avalanche hits Sumeru mountain behind Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand, causes panic

DEHRADUN: A massive avalanche hit the Sumeru mountain behind Kedarnath temple in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand on Sunday morning, triggering panic among pilgrims visiting the Himalayan shrine.

However, no damage to life and property was reported in the incident, according to NK Rajwar, district disaster management officer of Rudraprayag.

In the video clip shared widely online, a huge mass of snow can be seen descending down the mountain even as some pilgrims walking towards the temple panic, while some others looking at the phenomena, are awestruck.

"The sector officer at Kedarnath temple informed us that an avalanche struck the Sumeru mountain at around 7:30am. The incident occurred about 3-4 km away from the temple, near the source of Saraswati river," NK Rajwar told TOI.

The avalanche did not cause any damage nor did it result in rise in water level of Saraswati river, he further said.
