Australian Open 2023: Alfie Hewett claims first Melbourne wheelchair singles title with win over Tokita Oda

Alfie Hewett claimed his first Australian Open men’s wheelchair singles title by beating Tokita Oda.

Hewett dominated Japan’s Oda 6-3, 6-1 to add the individual crown to the fourth doubles title he won alongside Gordon Reid on Friday.

Runner-up in Melbourne in the past two years, an emotional Hewett broke down after winning his seventh Grand Slam singles title.

He now needs victory at Wimbledon to complete a career Grand Slam.

Hewett said: “Over the moon to get the victory. It has been a long time coming and a lot of hard work.

“To lose this tournament in the final for the last couple of years was heart-breaking and mentally challenging, so to get the opportunity to be back here and playing another singles final was something I was extremely motivated for.

“I had a very intense pre-season and thankfully it has paid off. I am delighted to get over the line this time. It is a massive weight off my shoulders and I can use the confidence for the rest of the year, and hopefully to get more success.”
