Australian critic and author Clive James dies at the age of 80

Clive James, poet, critic and broadcaster, has died.

He passed away at his home in Cambridge on Sunday, November 24 at the age of 80.

It came 10 years after he revealed he had been diagnosed with a terminal illness and one month after he laid down his pen for the last time.

A private funeral attended by family and friends took place in the chapel at Pembroke College, Cambridge on Wednesday, November 27.

United Agents have released a statement on behalf of his family saying: "He endured his ever-multiplying illnesses with patience and good humour, knowing until the last moment that he had experienced more than his fair share of this 'great, good world'.

"He was grateful to the staff at at Addenbrooke's Hospital for their care and kindness, which unexpectedly allowed him so much extra time.

"His family would like to thank the nurses of the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home team for their help in his last days, which allowed him to die peacefully and at home, surrounded by his family and his books."

James' death comes almost a decade after he was first diagnosed with N-cell chronic lymphomatic leukaemia.

He made his fame as an established literary critic and TV columnist on his show Clive James on Television, which drew in millions of people on Sunday nights in the early 1980s.

He was awarded a CBE in 2012 for his services to literature and media and was handed numerous other prizes and awards for publishing more than 30 books and over a dozen collections of poetry.
