Australian airline Jetstar announces major change to baggage policy

  • Australian budget airline Jetstar will begin charging passengers to store carry-on bags in overhead lockers from February next year.
  • Under the new policy, a small personal item that fits under the seat will remain free, but larger cabin bags for overhead storage will require an additional purchase.
  • Jetstar said the changes follow customer and staff feedback, with chief executive Stephanie Tully saying that the policy would “make better use of overhead locker space, streamline boarding and help more flights depart on time”.
  • Fees for overhead locker access will vary by route and demand, as reported by the BBC, starting at at A$25 for shorter domestic flights.
  • The announcement has prompted strong reactions online, with critics accusing the airline of introducing another fee for services that should be included in the ticket price.
